X-TRAKOJAN is a creative urban activation project by designer Nicholas Niemen in Stockholm’s Frihamnen district. Working with the city, he transformed leftover construction waste into public furniture, turning an empty port site into a space for rest and community. Materials like fences, concrete footings, and plywood are reimagined into seats, decks, and tables.
Inspired by a former harbour hangout called ‘Extrakojan,’ the installation honours the site’s past while offering an innovative, sustainable model for future cities. As Frihamnen awaits redevelopment, X-TRAKOJAN demonstrates how neglected land can be repurposed. The design is not only functional but also tells a story through its materials, proving that reused elements can bring character, comfort, and meaning to public space.

Nicholas Niemen is a Stockholm-based architect and designer whose studio specialises in transforming construction and industrial waste into public architectural interventions. His practice emphasises circular design: leftover beams, concrete fragments, and discarded materials are reimagined as benches, tables, and communal spaces in urban environments.
For example, his project “X-TRAKOJAN” transforms a vacant harbour lot in Stockholm into a gathering place made entirely from salvaged materials. The emphasis on material honesty and reuse supports a minimalist aesthetic that interacts with the city’s industrial history while creating new social and spatial value. His studio’s work encourages reflection on consumption, waste, and the potential for architecture to repurpose discarded materials, embedding narrative and ecology into built structures.
Nicholas Niemen
