Lapso is a sculptural lighting series that grows rather than is manufactured. Conceived by Polybion™ with Natural Urbano, each piece is crafted from five sheets of bacterial cellulose—marking the first interior use of Celium™. Created through fermentation, these sheets develop a distinctive tone, density, and ruffled texture, ensuring that no two lamps are identical. When illuminated, the translucent surface reveals layered gradients and shifting opacity; when unlit, it highlights the material's presence and silhouette.
Available in Natural (warm, untreated) and Humo (a darker, dyed version), Lapso celebrates its biological origins while broadening aesthetic possibilities. A removable screen enhances diffusion, increases durability, and enables simple maintenance.
After debuting at the 2025 London Design Festival’s Biofab Fair, this made-to-order lamp signifies Polybion’s entry into the interiors market and champions biofabrication for product design, with worldwide shipping.

Polybion’s design studio operates at the confluence of science and creativity, transforming agro-industrial fruit waste into high-performance biomaterials. Inspired by nature’s cycles, the team combines biotechnologists, material scientists, engineers, and designers to develop the company’s signature product, Celium™, in a process that emphasises both aesthetics and function. Each piece is created through biological growth rather than synthetic assembly — textures, grain, embossing, and colour development are embedded at the cellular level.
Rather than impose a design, the studio creates the conditions for nature to contribute its innate form-making intelligence. The result is materials that exude a refined sense of luxury, yet are inherently unique — each sheet displays subtle differences, like fingerprints. With the design studio central to the production process, Polybion redefines not only material manufacturing but also the very concept of design authorship.
