FabBRICK, founded by Clarisse Merlet in Paris, transforms discarded textiles into patented compressed bricks. These eco-innovative materials are used for furniture, lighting, and interior surfaces, demonstrating that textile waste can become durable, aesthetic, and sustainable design elements. The project redefines material value and promotes circular architecture.

FabBRICK, the Paris-based studio founded by designer Clarisse Merlet, is transforming the conversation between waste, design, and architecture. Its core vision offers an innovative solution to one of today’s most urgent environmental issues: textile waste. Instead of throwing away used fabrics, FabBRICK turns them into durable, functional, and stylish objects, combining sustainability with aesthetics.
Merlet’s patented process compresses unwanted textiles into solid blocks, creating a new material that can be used in construction, interiors, and product design. From sculptural lamps and modern furniture to acoustic wall panels and architectural bricks, each piece shows the potential hidden within discarded threads. This approach not only keeps waste out of landfills but also challenges traditional ideas of resource and material value.
Beyond its retail boutique, where visitors can see unique designs, FabBRICK expands its work into corporate and cultural collaborations. The studio has become a popular partner for CSR initiatives, involving companies in circular practices that encourage employees and clients to participate in the sustainable design process. Transparency and craftsmanship define every project, strengthening the studio’s reputation as both an innovator and educator.
By combining creativity with responsibility, FabBRICK shows how ecological awareness can shape a new aesthetic for living and working spaces. In doing so, Merlet and her team are not only creating objects—they are helping to foster a cultural shift towards mindful consumption and regenerative design. FabBRICK’s story is a potent reminder: sustainability and beauty can emerge from the same cloth.
The inception of FabBRICK
Clarisse Merlet, a pioneering entrepreneur, challenged conventional boundaries and employed innovative thinking to address the problem of textile waste. Driven by unwavering resolve, she undertook the initiative to transform discarded textiles into durable bricks.
Notably, her initial motivation for recycling garments was not inspired by the substantial waste produced by the textile industry, but rather by the aspiration to develop bricks without reliance on concrete. In collaboration with Media City, Qatar, she stated, "I took two T-shirts, compressed them into a brick, and it maintained its integrity. That was the origin of FabBRICK!"
Clarisse Merlet
Clarisse Merlet, a French architect and innovator, is the visionary founder of Fabbrick. While still an architecture student, she discovered a simple yet powerful concept: compressing textile waste into brick-like modules using shredded fabrics and her eco‑friendly glue—no disassembly, no waste. Her prototype—made by squashing two T‑shirts—worked, sparking the creation of a design studio in Paris’s 19th arrondissement.
Since launching FabBRICK in late 2018, Merlet has recycled over 12 tonnes of textiles into more than 40,000 decorative, thermally and acoustically insulating bricks, produced in various sizes and custom hues derived directly from the fabrics. Supported by awards and crowdfunding, she’s scaling from artisanal workshops to local microfactories, expanding sustainably and locally.
