Designer Yu Watanabe's innovative project employs Urushi lacquer to foster a microcosmic space harmonising us with nature. Utilising traditional Japanese crafts in a modern design, this venture aims to revitalise the dwindling craft of Urushi. Unlike Western practices of eliminating shadows, this design embraces them, enhancing aesthetic appeal.

Urushi lacquer, a sustainable and beautifully glossy sap used in traditional Japanese crafts, is utilised in this modern design project. Evoking a sense of being in a forest, bamboo is arranged in tree-like shapes creating a space that connects us with nature.

The bamboo arrangement in tree-like formations evokes a forest ambience, accentuating the interplay of light and shadow. This project explores captivating material properties and invites viewers to perceive these materials through their unique cultural and natural narratives, promoting a deeper connection with nature. Through blending tradition with modernity, this piece asks us to reconsider our relationship with shadows and embrace sustainability, advocating a meaningful relationship between nature and individuals.

Yu Watanabe is a distinguished art director, designer, and innovative material explorer. He elevates product value to a global audience by bridging the gap between clients and society. With a future-oriented approach and a knack for problem-solving, he delved into the intersection of creativity and pressing social concerns post-graduation from Tama Art University.

His tenure as an Art Director further ignited this passion. Later, his academic pursuit at Central Saint Martins honed his focus on the synergy of design, materials, and science. Beyond graphic design, Watanabe deciphers the multifaceted value of objects, communicating solutions that resonate with culture, nature, and global challenges.
