During the 2019 graduation exhibition at the Royal College of Art in the UK, designer Li Jia-ling from the Textiles Department - Mixed Media Group presented her graduation project titled "The New Antique." This unique display featured an array of hand fans, a four-meter-long scarf, and a double-person cape. "The New Antique" is an extension of Jia-ling's project "35 Pieces of Jade," which was displayed at the 2018 Dutch Design Week. Both projects revolve around the legends and lucky items of Southeast Asian islands.

Jia-ling's creations probe contemporary designers' role in sustainability and environmental conservation. They question why we produce objects and their meanings beyond their functional utility. In her work, one can see the employment of traditional crafts, materials, and symbols, such as basketry weaving, jade carving, and auspicious patterns. As a designer with an industrial product background, she hopes to convey that innovation relies not just on modern technology but also on cultural heritage and nature. For example, hand fans were used as love tokens in the past; a woman giving a fan to a man symbolized a promise of love.

Having three years of professional experience in product development in Taiwan, Jia-ling has also studied at the Taiwan Crafts Research and Development Institute due to her passion for natural fibres. Her ability to balance digital and manual techniques shows this, sparking new possibilities in her work. In "The New Antique" project, she developed a unique method of crafting hand fans. She used laser-cutting to create a wood template, manually wrapped different fibres like banana silk and vine around it, and then used electrical embroidery to fix the fibre structure.

During her studies at the Royal College of Art, Jia-ling explored how humans assign meaning to objects. People historically sought symbolism from the land, nature, and animals. For instance, they believed stones possessed natural powers, a bundle of straw hanging on the wall represented good luck for the New Year, and red and circular shapes held different symbolic meanings across cultures. To Jia-ling, this is a process of reassembling symbols and creating new codes.

"Many visitors to the exhibition told me that my works resemble museum exhibits as if they each have their own stories and are 'worth a long look,' particularly their materials and details. These transformed symbols in the creative process seem both new and old. Indeed, what I'm doing resembles museology, finding some 'creation methods' in history that are not scientific but have certain formulas," said Jia-ling.

擁有三年台灣產品開發工作經驗的佳玲,也曾在台灣工藝研究發展中心學習,以追求她對天然纖維的熱愛。因此,我們可以看到她如何在數位與手工之間找到平衡,並引發新的可能性。在《新古董》的計劃中,佳玲創造了一種特殊的手扇製作方式:她利用雷射切割製作出一個木質模板,手工將各種不同的纖維,如香蕉絲和草藤,纏繞在上面,然後用電繡將纖維固定在一起。

在英國皇家藝術學院就讀期間,她研究了人們如何賦予物品意義。在過去,人們從土地,自然和動物中尋找象徵,比如,人們相信石頭具有自然的力量,掛在牆上的一束稻草代表著新年的好運,而紅色和圓形在不同的文化歷史中都有不同的象徵意義。對佳玲來說,這是一個重組符號並創造新符碼的過程。

佳玲表示:“許多來參觀展覽的人對我說我的作品像是博物館陳列的物件一樣,好像有自己的故事,看起來很耐看,尤其是其材料和細節。這些在創作過程中被轉化的符號,新舊兼容,我所做的的確像是在學習博物館學,在歷史中找到一些雖非科學,但有一定公式的‘創造方式’。”

Jialing is a multidisciplinary designer with a background in textile and industrial design. Her work is widely inspired by local Taiwanese crafts, small-scale manufacturers and raw materials.

Born in Tainan, Taiwan, She graduated from the Industrial Product Design Department of Shih Chien University and the Royal College of Art, UK. She was engaged in product design and development and co-founded Studio Double Plus with designer Chen Hewen in 2016. It has won internationally renowned design awards such as Red Dot and Golden Dot Best of Best.

Her work is based on exploring and observing product life cycles and sustainable use of materials. Jialing's creative scope covers soft decoration, home decoration, daily necessities, etc. Through her practice, she hopes to realize that innovation is based not only on new technology but also on cultural heritage and nature.
